Planning for the Sale of a Business: Opportunities, Issues and Recommendation

Considering selling your business?  Trying to decide if now is a good time?  Wondering where to start? Concerned that you don’t know what you don’t know?  For many business owners, the sale of their company will be the single most significant liquidity event, and possibly lifestyle altering event, of their lives.  The speakers will discuss preparation for this event, including how to:

  • Maximize profits
  • Avoid common pitfalls
  • Communicate clearly and confidently with employees
  • Create an effective program for retaining key talent
  • Learn what you can do now to prepare for a future sale

David Heinemann, a veteran investment banker, will discuss motivations for selling; alternatives to the sale of your business; timing the sale of your business; the most common issues encountered in a sale process; selecting/using an advisor; valuation and other deal terms and post deal integration.

Anna Rappaport, a business coach and former attorney will discuss communication strategies to maintain continuity and retain talent during and immediately after the sale of a business. The presentation will include the impact of cultural issues on a sales decision; perceived threats confronting employees; and actions a business can take in preparation for a future merger or acquisition.

Riyad Said, a financial services advisor and executive will discus the impact and range of outcomes associated with different deal structures, timing and planning strategies on the amount of wealth created, preserved and ultimately transferred; the benefits of deploying certain estate-planning strategies before the sale; exit or liquidity strategies other than a straight 100% sale; and other research findings.
